FREITAS, ANTHONY J. a long-time resident of Dedham, MA, Anthony (Tony) Freitas died peacefully at the age of 90 on November 13, 2021 with his family by his side.
He graduated from Oliver Ames High School in North Easton, MA, after which he served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He then went on to earn degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Wentworth Institute and Northeastern University.
Tony married Eve Michienzi of Norwood in 1956 and they brought three beautiful daughters into their lives. While he enjoyed indulging all his girls with affection, he derived the most pleasure from fussing over his granddaughter.
His career as a Senior Principal Engineer with Polaroid spanned 30 years and yielded many lifelong friendships. He loved to invent and problem-solve, referring fondly to the company as "a candy store for his mind." He also pursued many extracurricular interests that tapped his talents and athleticism: tennis, wine-making, scuba diving, kayaking, bowling, cycling, gardening, to name only a few-and of course creating one-of-a-kind, whimsical art in his woodshop.
Tony took great pleasure in contributing to his home community through volunteer work with The Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Town Meeting member and the Endicott Estate Commission. Most recently, he added the Dedham Civic Pride committee, Dedham Rotary, and the Retired Men's Club to his list of affiliations. An avid gardener, he enjoyed planting in the community gardens, often sharing his homegrown vegetables and spectacular sunflowers with friends at the Endicott Estate greenhouse.
He is survived by his best friend and wife of 65 years, Eve Freitas, as well as his loving children; Fran Rush and her husband Richard of Norwood, MA; Nancie Freitas and her husband Paul Priola of Hill, NH; Jeannie Freitas of Norwood, MA; and granddaughter Erin Rush of Norwood, MA.
The family invites friends and family to celebrate Tony's passionate, creative life and contagious enthusiasm at an Open House at the Endicott Estate in Dedham, MA this Saturday, Nov 20th from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m., with a Memorial Tribute taking place at 1:30.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Tony's memory may be made to Hospice of Massachusetts, 681 Main Street, Haverhill, MA 01830
