Arthur John Saarinen passed away unexpectedly at his home in Norwood, MA, on August 23, 2024.
Born in Newton, Massachusetts, Arthur was the beloved son of the late Seelem and Laila (Ahola) Saarinen. He grew up in Norwood and was a proud graduate of Norwood High School, Class of 1969. After high school, he pursued college-level courses before launching a rewarding career in graphic design and illustration. Arthur brought his exceptional artistic talents to Digital Equipment Corporation and MIT Lincoln Laboratory, where he became known for his skillful hand-drawn cartoons and illustrations—work that reflected both humor and thoughtfulness.
Arthur served his country with honor in the National Guard from 1971 to 1977. In his late twenties, he embarked on a period of travel and exploration that took him to Alaska, California, and eventually to Tennessee. He spent five years at The Farm in Summertown, Tennessee, where he embraced a simpler, intentional way of life that aligned with his reflective nature and values. These experiences helped shape his worldview and deepened his appreciation for community, creativity, and spiritual growth.
He had a lifelong fascination with the American Old West and took great joy in participating in a Single Action Cowboy group in the early 2000s, where he found camaraderie and fun in stepping into history. In retirement, Arthur returned to his artistic roots, spending time painting, drawing, and engaging deeply with books and ideas. He was especially drawn to Eastern philosophy, whose teachings brought him a lasting sense of peace and perspective.
Arthur is survived by his loving son, Timothy. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Elaine.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Arthur’s memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (t2t.org), an organization supporting veterans and first responders—an effort that would have brought him great pride and joy, knowing his legacy supports those who serve others.
