Charles E.
Petrie
Dec 14, 1936 — Sep 3, 2026
Chuck Petrie possessed a sense of humor like no other. His unmistakable wit could turn an ordinary moment into a story people would repeat for years. He loved to laugh, but perhaps even more, he loved making the people around him laugh and feel better. When he passed away on September 3, countless people lost the person who could comfort them after receiving such sad news.
Chuck grew up in the Oakdale section of East Dedham, Massachusetts. He was raised with a strong Catholic faith, and at Saint Mary's in Dedham he started to meet people who would become lifelong friends. He graduated from Saint Thomas Aquinas High School in 1954, where he was the class president, and then went on to earn a degree from Boston College before pursuing a successful career in sales.
Chuck valued family and friendship above anything else and fostered strong connections with people from all phases of his life. He was renowned for driving great distances to attend events that were important to his friends, family members, and their children. He truly excelled at encouraging people from any sideline.
Special mention goes out to the following friends and family members: Wally and Claire Vaughan from Marlborough, Eddie and Millie Hathaway from Canton, Jim and MaryAnn Kenney from Norwood, David and Terry Perez from Brockton, Tom Rooney from Fairfield Connecticut, David Imrie from Weymouth, Claire O'Donnell from Mashpee, Jean Giacomuzzi Petrie from Hopkinton, Sister Catherine Decker, CSJ, Andrea and Eddie Colp from Wareham, Mark and Joanne Petrie from Hull, Ellen Petrie from Norwood, and Chris and Christine Petrie from Norfolk.
Chuck is survived by his son, Charles Edward Petrie Jr. and his wife Kim of Raleigh, North Carolina, as well as the two grandchildren they gave him, Tobin and Owen. He was pre-deceased by three brothers, Leo, Edward, and Joseph, as well as by his parents, Leo and Ethel, and by his sister-in-law Pauline.
Chuck was a great teacher right up to the end. Many of his nephews remember some of the most important pieces of knowledge that Chuck offered. Chuck's mantra for assertiveness will be passed down through generations: “If you don't ask the question, the answer is always ‘No.’” This one piece of simple advice captures how encouraging Chuck's presence could feel. He will be deeply missed by many.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on October 6, 2026 at 10:30 AM, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 176 Washington Street, East Walpole. Interment will take place at a later date.
