GAKEN, ELAINE (Broderick) Of Norwood, died Monday, April 15th 2024, at Ellis Nursing Home after lengthy illness. She was 76. Daughter of the late William F. and Edith (Grimm) Broderick, she was born, raised and educated in West Roxbury, graduating from Notre Dame High School with the class of 1965. She went on to graduate from the Faulkner Hospital Nursing Program in 1967 becoming a Registered Nurse.
Mrs. Gaken started her nursing career in Boston working for the Deaconess and Beth Israel Hospitals going on to work as an Emergency Room nurse at the Norwood Hospital for over 25 years before ending her tenure in Day Surgery. She was a member of the Massachusetts Nursing Association.
Mrs. Gaken was a talented crafter, knitter and quilter, who took up golf in her later years. She was known for sharing the spoils of her vegetable garden and tending to her rose bush. Mrs. Gaken had served as a Girl Scout Troop Leader at St. Catherine’s Parish. An avid Red Sox fan she enjoyed watching each game.
Mrs. Gaken is survived by her husband of 47 years James P. Gaken, her daughters Kristen A. Gaken of Norwood and Julie E. Wotring and her husband Marc of Montana, her son James W. Gaken of Walpole, her brother Martin Broderick of Arizona and her grandchildren Broderick and Jordan Gaken and Bridger and Cullen Wotring. She was predeceased by her brother William Broderick.
Visiting hours will be held on SUNDAY, April 21, 2024, from 2-6PM at the Kraw-Kornack Funeral Home 1248 Washington St. Norwood. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated TUESDAY morning, April 23, 2024, at Saint Catherine of Siena Church, 547 Washington St. Norwood at 11AM. Burial will be private.
