James Frederick Beatty

July 4, 1932 — March 14, 2022

BEATTY, JAMES FREDERICK of Amherst, NH and East Walpole MA formerly of Norwood and Westwood MA, passed away on March 14, 2022 in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 89 years old. He lost his beloved wife Nona of 68 years last September and has suffered heartache ever since. Jim was born on July 4, 1932 in Cleveland, Ohio. As a child he thought the fireworks were for him. He was a devoted father to his five children. He leaves Lynn Brown and her husband Jack of Walpole MA; Suzan Cullen and her husband Mike of Amherst, NH; Steven Beatty and his wife Lynn of S. Easton, MA; Janet Cavanaugh and her husband John of E. Walpole, MA; as well as the late J. Talbot Beatty. He was the cherished grandfather of 11 grandchildren: Jason Brown, Kristen Rongone, Patrick Brown, Erin Cullen, Timothy Cullen, Jenna Denis, James Beatty, Christina Beatty, Ryan Beatty, Alison Beatty and the late Mark Beatty. Jimbo/Papa was the adored great grandfather of 13 children: Isabella, Jaxson, Tia, Aylah, Caroline, Brynn, Savannah, Bryce, Evelyn, Natalie, Teddy, Albie and Joey. He also leaves his brother Richard Beatty of Northampton MA and his sister-in-law Charline Newcomb of Milton, MA; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Jim began his engineering career serving in the Coast Guard as an Electrical Technician 1st Class. While stationed in Rockland, ME he met his beloved wife Nona. They married on March 28, 1953 and started their family. Jim was honorably discharged in 1955 and moved the family back to Ohio where he attended Kent State University and graduated with honors from CASE Institute of Technology in 1960. He was a member of the swim team and loved playing handball. After graduation, they moved the family to MA and Jim worked as an Electrical Engineer at Raytheon, Honeywell, RCA, Photomem and finally retired from Digital. Jim and his wife Nona established the Mug 'N Muffin in Norwood, MA in 1974. He utilized his engineering expertise to design the restaurant. In 1993, Jim and Nona along with their son Steven, established Stonebridge Cafe in Brockton, MA. Again, helping with the design of the restaurant. He even served as the delivery boy! Jim loved spending time with his huge family. He particularly enjoyed his grandkids and great grandchildren. He loved having conversations and would be very engaging. In younger years, he played the ukelele and we'd all sing. He loved hearing his wife Nona sing and hum every day. Jim was a man of great intelligence. There wasn't a topic that didn't peak his curiosity. He could fix or build anything... even if it took years. Jim enjoyed driving and exploring back roads. He loved any kind of sausage, thick bacon, and a slab of butter on everything. He lived life on his own terms. Jim enjoyed vacationing in their condo at Bonita Springs FL and served on the board for many years. He loved their cottage on Baboosic Lake in Amherst NH. Many a fun-filled family gathering with a pontoon boat cocktail cruise took place. He also truly appreciated the comfort of living in Walpole with Jan and John. He loved her gourmet cooking! His influence and knowledge shaped many lives, young and old. Jim was larger than life and will be sorely missed but we are so thankful he is at peace with his beloved wife.
