James M. "Jim"
Power
August 20, 1932 – May 12, 2026
James M. “Jim” Power, age 93, a longtime resident of Walpole, passed away peacefully on the evening of Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Sunrise of Norwood. He was the devoted and loving husband of the late Mary H. (Mullin) Power, who predeceased him on November 13, 2021.
Born on August 20, 1932, in Dedham, Jim was one of four children of the late James and Ellen (Kelly) Power, both proud Irish immigrants. He was raised in Dedham and attended St. Mary’s School through the eighth grade. Jim later graduated with the Class of 1950 from Christopher Columbus High School in Boston’s North End.
Following graduation, Jim worked full-time for a year before answering the call to serve his country. He enlisted in the United States Air Force at the start of the Korean War and served honorably for four years, achieving the rank of Airman First Class. Upon his discharge, he was awarded both the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal in recognition of his service.
With the support of the GI Bill, Jim pursued his education at Boston University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics. He went on to build a successful career, first serving as Comptroller at Peabody Construction. He later became a Senior Mortgage Officer at the Massachusetts Housing Finance Agency.
Outside of his professional life, Jim cherished time spent with his family. He enjoyed both extended family vacations and day trips. Jim was also an avid movie enthusiast and took great pride in his Irish heritage.
A devoted alumnus of Boston University, Jim remained closely connected to the university community. He was a longtime season ticket holder for BU Hockey and an active member of the Friends of BU Hockey, returning to campus often and with great enthusiasm.
Above all, Jim found his greatest joy in the company of his family. He will be remembered for his warmth, dedication, and the love he shared with those closest to him.
Jim is survived by his cherished children, Brian Power of Walpole and Eileen Smith and her husband, Justin, of Vermont; and by his loving granddaughter, Julia Smith of Vermont. He also leaves his dear siblings, Veronica Lyons of Norwood and Kevin Power of Dedham, as well as his late brother, Jack Power. He is also survived by his sister in laws Marion Power of Dedham and Sheila Malloy of North Attleboro and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will miss him deeply.
Visiting hours will be held on MONDAY, May 18, 2026, from 9:00–10:30 a.m. at the Kraw-Kornack Funeral Home, 1248 Washington Street, Norwood, MA.
His Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Church, 176 Washington Street, East Walpole, MA.
