John F. “Jack” Donovan, Jr., age 90, a longtime resident of Norwood, passed away on the early morning of Saturday, August 30, 2025, surrounded by the love, comfort, and care of devoted family. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, wife of 67 years, Ethel (McDonough) Donovan.
Jack grew up in Hyde Park, the youngest of three children and the only son born to the late John F. Donovan, Sr. and Catherine (O’Connell) Donovan. After graduating from Hyde Park High School in 1953, Jack enlisted in the Marine Corps where he served time as a drill instructor on Parris Island before he was honorably discharged in 1956 after being stationed in Hawaii.
Jack had a great work ethic and took pride in providing for his family. Jack worked at Lamb Brothers Co. Inc., Polaroid, and finished his career at Gillette.
Jack was an avid Boston sports fan and loved spending time at his house located on the Cape in West Dennis. Jack was a member and part time worker at Dennis Highland Golf Club, enjoying many days on the course. Above all, he was most content when he was making memories and spending time being “grandpa” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jack is survived by his cherished children: Jack Donovan III and his wife Janet of Norwood, Maureen McDonough and her husband Kevin of Norwood, Michael Donovan and his wife Cathleen of Kingston, Brian Donovan of Marshfield, and Steven Donovan and his wife Karin of Arizona; his 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; his sister Peg Murphy; and numerous extended family members and friends.
In addition to his wife and parents, Jack is preceded in passing by his sister: Eileen Baressi and his brother-in-laws: John Murphy and Domenic Baressi.
A lasting memory will always be sitting with Jack, his arms across his chest, a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes.
