Obituary

John J. Heffernan, Jr., age 74, a longtime resident of Norwood, passed away in the early morning hours of Thursday, September 17, 2026, at Briarwood Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Needham. He was the devoted husband of the late Maureen Ann (McCann) Heffernan, who passed away on November 29, 2021.

Born in Boston, John was one of three children and the only son of the late John J. Heffernan, Sr. and Mary (Costello) Heffernan. He was raised in Jamaica Plain and attended Boston College High School before graduating from Boston English High School. As an adult, while balancing the responsibilities of work and family, John furthered his education by attending evening classes at Northeastern University, where he earned his college degree.

At the age of 18, John began a distinguished career with the federal government, primarily serving with the Defense Contract Management Agency. Throughout his career, he was actively involved in his union and proudly served as its president for a period of time.

In his spare time, John enjoyed watching the Boston Celtics, spending time with his grandchildren, and socializing with friends as a member of the Randolph Elks.

John is survived by his three cherished sons: Joseph Heffernan and his partner, Mindy Keyes, of Norwood; Steven Heffernan and his partner, Erin Walsh, of Norwood; and Ryan Heffernan and his partner, Cherilynn Soto, of Norwood. He was the proud and loving grandfather of Collin, Tyler, and Shayne. He was also the beloved brother of Dianne Heffernan of West Roxbury and the late Irene Heffernan.
