SMITH, KATIE M. (Muratore) of Norwood passed away surrounded by her family after a long battle with cancer on December 13, 2024 at the age of 39. Beloved wife of Joshua Y Smith. Devoted mother of Oliver and Sawyer Smith of Norwood. Loving daughter of Carol (Gorisse) Kelly of Foxboro and Thomas Muratore of Reedville, VA. Sister of Christina Muratore of Cambridge, Rose McCarthy of Charlestown and TJ Muratore of Portsmouth, NH.
Katie, a loving mother, cherished partner, devoted teacher, traveler, and crafter, passed away peacefully. She was a patient, kind, and compassionate soul whose warmth touched everyone who knew her.
Katie's greatest joy in life was her role as a mother to her two sons, Oliver and Sawyer. She adored watching them grow, supporting their passions, and sharing in their adventures. Whether helping with school events, cheering them on from the sidelines, or simply enjoying quiet moments together, Katie’s love for her boys was boundless. She instilled in them a love of learning, kindness toward others, and the importance of living life to the fullest.
Katie also shared a deep and enduring partnership with her husband, Josh, built on love, mutual respect, and unwavering support. Together, they created a home filled with warmth, unconditional love, and laughter.
Katie found immense joy in teaching and inspiring young minds. As a dedicated STEM teacher at the Maimonides School in Brookline, she passionately championed education and created innovative math and science camps that became a source of pride for her and the school community. Beyond the classroom, Katie extended her love of service to her children’s school, serving as Vice President of the PTO, where she formed lasting connections and brought creativity to every initiative. Her handmade bracelets, crafted with care, brightened the lives of teachers and supported fundraising efforts close to her heart.
Katie used her talent for crafting to give back in meaningful ways, donating proceeds from her handmade projects to metastatic breast cancer research (METAvivor). This was a cause deeply personal to her, and through her creativity and generosity, she contributed to advancing research and supporting others affected by the disease. Her efforts combined her love for crafting with her unwavering hope for a better future.
An adventurer at heart, Katie treasured traveling with her family. Over the past five years, she explored breathtaking destinations, including Hawaii, Alaska, Key West, Disney World, Universal Studios, and California. One of her most cherished memories was witnessing sea turtles gracefully swimming in the warm Hawaiian waters—a moment of pure joy that reflected her appreciation for life’s beauty.
Katie also loved spending time at the beach, especially at the Cape, where she made countless memories with her family. These sun-soaked days by the ocean brought her peace and happiness, and they will remain a treasured part of her legacy.
In addition to her many passions, Katie courageously shared her story as a model in the Runway for Recovery fashion show over the last three years. Her resilience and strength were an inspiration, and this year, her journey with metastatic breast cancer was honored and celebrated in a powerful way.
Katie's love, creativity, and dedication will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her life was a testament to the impact of kindness, perseverance, and the beauty of small, meaningful moments.
Katie is survived by her beloved children, her husband, her family, and a community of friends and colleagues who will carry her memory forward.
