Lawrence Breen, better known as "Larry", age 84, of Walpole, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 7, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Winchester, MA, on November 30, 1938, he was the son of Patrick M. Breen and Katherine V. (Noonan) Breen.
Larry grew up in Brookline, MA and worked many years for the Brookline Department of Public Works. He loved to fish and was an avid gardener, known for his apple pies and his homemade wine. Many times, he could be found in his basement teaching his grandkids how to play pool. Larry loved spending time in New Hampshire. He had homes in Gilmanton, Wolfeboro and later Freedom, and loved taking advantage of all that Lake Ossipee and Lake Winnipesaukee had to offer all year round.
Larry was a life-long fan of the Bruins and the Red Sox, but when it came to sporting events, or any other events that his grandchildren were involved in, he rarely missed one. He could be found in the stands of their many athletic events or competitions, and in the audience for any recitals or concerts. Larry was an incredibly proud "Papa," very much involved in the lives of his grandkids.
It was not just children in his family that he brought joy to. Larry made many mission trips to Medjugorje, bringing supplies, clothes and toys to the poor children of Bosnia, and returning with blessed medals and rosary beads for his friends and family. He also took on the role as Santa at the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette in Attleboro, hearing countless Christmas wishes of many children for several years.
Larry was the dear and devoted husband of Winifred (Mullin). Loving father of David Thomas Breen of Walpole, Christine Marie Cochrane and her husband Bruce of Walpole and Patricia Ann Magraw of Walpole. He was the cherished grandfather, "Papa," of Jessica Marie Cochrane, Melissa Ann Cochrane, Samantha Lynne Magraw and Zachary Thomas Magraw. Loving son of the late Patrick and Katherine. Dear brother of the late Margaret Casey, Mary Silverstrone, Helen Bennett, Richard Breen, John Breen, Robert Breen, Joseph Breen and Daniel Breen. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Larry will be missed by Holly, his beloved, loyal mutt who laid by his side until his very last day.
