Marie A. Hennessy, age 72, of Malden, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, February 7, 2026. She was surrounded by love, comfort, and care of her devoted family during her final moments.
Born in Boston, Marie was the first of five children born to the late Justin D. and Claire M. (Crowley) Hennessy. She was raised and grew up in Norwood. Education played a significant role in Marie's life. She graduated from the Perkins School for the Blind in 1972, demonstrating her early resolve to overcome challenges. Her thirst for knowledge led her to earn her bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from Assumption University. She further pursued her passion for helping others by attaining her master’s degree in Agency Counseling from Suffolk University.
Marie was a bright light in the lives of many, leaving a lasting impact through her dedication and work for the The Epilepsy Association of Greater Boston (now known as The Epilepsy Foundation of New England) of which she was a founding member, where she made an impact so many people that have epilepsy along with their families and MA Advocate Standing Strong. Her commitment to advocating for those with disabilities was evident throughout her career, where she tirelessly worked to make a difference in the lives of others.
Among her proudest accomplishments, Marie served as the President of both the Perkins School for the Blind Alumni Association and the Ski for Life Adaptive Program, showcasing her leadership and commitment to fostering community and support for those with disabilities.
Despite living with blindness, Marie's spirit and determination shone brightly. Her personality was characterized by optimism and resilience, inspiring those around her. She found joy in the outdoors, had a zest for travel, cherished the beauty of the ocean and beach, and enjoyed listening to music while savoring a comforting cup of tea.
Marie is survived by her proud and cherished sisters: Theresa H. Hill of Madison, NH, Donna M. MacKinnon and her late husband John Y. of Madison, NH, and Claire-Marie Ryan and her husband John W. of Norwood; her brother: Justin D. Hennessy, Jr. and his late wife Karen; and countless nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Marie is also preceded in passing by her seven Guide Dogs, with the most recent one being her beloved "Ragu."
Visiting hours will be held on WEDNESDAY, February 11, 2026, from 5:00pm-8:00pm in the Kraw-Kornack Funeral Home, 1248 Washington Street, Norwood. Marie's Funeral Mass will be held on THURSDAY, February 12, 2026, at 11:00am in St. Denis Church, 157 Washington Street, Westwood. Please go directly to church, there will be no procession from the funeral home.
Marie will be laid to rest in Highland Cemetery, Winter Street, Norwood.
