Mary E. Degnan, 91, went home to God peacefully from her recent home in Wrentham (formerly of Norwood) surrounded by family on Nov. 30, 2023. She was born at home in Jamaica Plain, MA to Edmond Joseph Kelly and Ellen Marie (O'Connor) Kelly, both originally from County Kerry, Ireland. Wife of the late John P. Degnan. Devoted mother of Mary Ellen Degnan (Phil Wood) of Columbia, Missouri, John of Norwood, Paul Michael (deceased), Dianne Appleman (Joseph) of Mashpee, Paul Edward (Sue) of Wrentham and Michael (Jennifer) of Winchester.
She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren Kevin Degnan, Allison Appleman, Katelyn Morse, Melanie Skeffington, Julie Wood, Shannon Degnan, Jack Degnan, Justin Wood, Tommy Degnan and Katie Degnan, and great-granddaughter Moira Degnan.
Mary is survived by her incredibly supportive sister, Ellen O'Connell. She was preceded in death by her brothers Edmond, Paul and Robert Kelly, brother-in-law Frank Degnan, and sisters-in-law Rosemary Menno and Faye Kelly. Also special to her were sisters-in-law Mary Kelly, Marilyn Kelly, Eleanor Degnan and Anne Paratore. In addition, she leaves behind cherished cousins, Mary O'Connor, Rita Gilroy and Mary Adducci, and many friends and neighbors.
Mary graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in 1949. She met her husband, John, at a dance a few years later. She loved dancing through her married life. The pair were known for their grace, floating across any dance floor. Mary and John enjoyed raising their family in Norwood and lived in the same house for 60 years with wonderful neighbors. She and John attended every game and school event possible for their children and grandchildren. Mary devoted much of her time to her parish and community. She was also an accomplished knitter.
Mary was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend who was incredibly kind and loving and was always there to help anyone who needed her. Mary had quiet strength and lived her life to be with family and friends. A kind and gentle soul, her companionship and words of wisdom will be greatly missed. Her deep faith was a core part of her life until the end. She left this world as she lived in it, conscious of God and at peace.
Mary's family would like to thank the many therapists, home caregivers, hospice staff, nurses and doctors who cared for her in her final year.
