Obituary

Russell, Otis Freland Jr. of Roslindale, formerly of Walpole and Maine passed away peacefully on January 22, 2026 surrounded by family. He was 93. He was born in Washburn, ME the son of the late Otis F. Russell, Sr. and Nellie (Plissey) Russell. Also known lovingly as Dad, Grampy, Gramps, Junior, Oat, and Pa. Otis is survived by eight children Michael R. Russell and his wife Deborah of Abington, Danny P. Russell and his wife Cheryl of NM, Diana L. Syverson and her husband Roger of Franklin, Joel J. Russell and his wife Rebecca of CA, Lisa A. Dawber of Milford, Nancy J. Russell and her husband James Hodgson of WI, Shari G. Hallas and her husband Dan of Roslindale and Jill D. Lucey and her husband William of FL. Brother of Carol Nelson of VA, Ginger Locke of NH, Paul Russell of ME, Phyllis Dugal of ME, and the late Lois Miller. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Beloved grandfather to 19 and 10 great-grandchildren.

Otis was 1950 class president and varsity basketball player at Washburn High School (Glennis was a cheerleader and sweetheart). Otis spent his younger years working on a northern Maine farm, lifeguard, all while being a jack of all trade at the family-owned Gulf gas station in town center. Glennis accepted Otis’s hand in marriage; they settled in North Walpole where they lived, loved, and prospered for 53 years. They were married team for 63 years.

Otis' greatest devotion was to Jesus, his loving family, and mentoring others. Otis and Glennis provided 30+ years of active and committed service to the youth program at Trinity Community Church, Norwood, where he also served as an elder for many years.

An aspiring and passionate trumpeter, he passed down his love for music to many of his children; you’d always find him tapping a toe or finger. From big band, swing, to U2 and Johnny Cash. His passions included sports (loved the Herald) and proudly supported his Boston teams.

Otis received a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering and Physics from the University of Maine and went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Engineering Management from Northeastern University while working full time at Honeywell Company. His engineering mind was more interested in how a clock was built rather than simply asking the time.

Otis is a patriot, from college ROTC to serving the US Army during the Korean War. He loved our country.

Otis left an incredible legacy.....'sometimes in life we plant trees for others to climb', he planted many. He passed with grace and dignity. Always good for a bear hug, and belly laugh…his sense of humor only gained steam with age. He will be dearly missed and remembered by his family and friends.

A family-only- wake will be held at the Kraw Kornack Funeral Home, Norwood, MA. A Celebration of Life for Otis will be held this summer at Trinity Community Church, 234 Walpole Street, Norwood, MA August 1st, more details to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Otis' memory to the Jeremy Russell Memorial Foundation, 61 Rockland Street, Abington, MA 02351.
