Rayme Anne Sonia of Milton, MA, and originally of Gloucester, MA, passed away peacefully and
surrounded by her family on May 2, 2025, at the age of 75. She leaves behind her husband of 47 years, William T. Sergi, her daughters Gailyc C. Sonia of Sharon, Quinn A. Sonia-Sergi and her partner Christopher J. Walker of Belmont, her sister Debra J. Eide of Winona, MN, and her granddaughter Teyah H. Braunstein of Sharon.
While Rayme was a nurse by profession, having graduated from Youville Hospital School of Nursing in Cambridge, MA, her true passions lay outside of traditional work. She was an exceptional cook and baker, as anyone who attended family gatherings or her legendary cookie parties can attest. When her family was younger, she would continually find new recipes to perfect because she loved experimenting and creating new experiences for herself and her family.
She was also a prodigious and remarkably talented textile artist, weaving, knitting, crocheting, quilting, dollmaking, basket weaving, cross stitching, and needlepointing her way through life with panache and creating beauty she shared with her loved ones. Throughout her daughters’ childhoods, she created unforgettable and elaborate Halloween costumes, and as her children grew and moved into their own homes, her quilts, pillows, and knitted creations adorned their residences. She intuitively knew how to create the feeling of home with her designs, and she had a knack for finding the right color palette and patterns to connect with those lucky enough to receive her gifts. She somehow always knew exactly what to create to make the gift recipient feel seen and understood.
Rayme was an animal lover, in particular, of cats. They would find her no matter where she was, and she befriended them all. She was an independent feral cat rescue operation of one, facilitating many TNR sorties to manage the local feral cat population, and collaborating with the local animal shelter for adoption of her rescues.
She was a teacher by nature, offering quilting classes through the Milton adult education program, and she supported women and families with young children as a La Leche League leader in the early 1980s. An avid reader, Rayme was truly a life-long learner, curious about everything, and she instilled that curiosity in her daughters and granddaughter. Her legacy is one of tireless creativity, thoughtfulness, humor, and most of all, dedication to her family.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Beacons Restaurant on Route 1 in Walpole from 12-3 pm. Remembrances will begin promptly at 12:30pm, followed by a lunch reception.
