Thomas F. Tierney, of Norwood, passed away on October 30, 2023 at the age of 81.
Thomas grew up in Mission Hill and Brighton. When he was 16 years old, he dropped out of high school and lied about his age to join the United States Marine Corps and was a Vietnam Veteran. Upon his return he worked as a US Postal Worker for a year before beginning his career in law enforcement. Thomas started as an MDC Police Officer and served in Cambridge, Braintree, and Norwood Police Departments before finishing the last 20 years of his career as a highly decorated Sgt. Detective for the Quincy Police Department. He worked on homicide cases and had a special sense for his job. In the early 1990's Ed Bradley featured Thomas on an episode of 60 Minutes as a real-life hero for many for his relentless and outstanding work with domestic violence. He loved his work and every year he could be found in the top 3 on the list of officers in the state for hours worked.
Thomas was an avid Boston sports fan and a member of the Emerald Society and a Norfolk County Deputy Sheriff.
Thomas was an unbelievable father and was like a second father to many of his sons' friends over the years. "Mr. T" and "Iron legs" were two of his nicknames, but he also had nicknames for everyone he spoke to. "Sarge" and "Julio" just to name a few, were some of his favorites.
Thomas lived for his family, first for Maria, the love of his life, and then his boys. In more recent years, Thomas was happiest surrounded by his family and attending his beloved grandchildren's various activities.
Thomas was the dear and devoted husband of the late Maria (Constantino) Tierney. Loving father of Thomas Tierney Jr. of Norwood and Timothy Tierney and his wife Kim of Dedham. Cherished grandfather of Ryan, Rory, and Reese. Dear brother of Jamie and his wife Kathleen, David, and Donna. Brother-in-law of Joseph and Diane Constantino. Dear uncle of Francine Booth, Timothy Tierney, several other loving nieces and nephews and Chad and Samantha Stumpo.
